The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Security Prison 21

Under the Khmer Rouge regime, between 1975 and 1979, it is estimated that 3 out of 7 Cambodian citizens died by starvation or by means of horrible torture and executions. A visit I won't forget any time soon ...

Choeung Ek is one of many places where people were executed immediately (in most cases) upon artival, later commonly known as the killing fields. Wearing glasses, knowing a foreign language, or being a teacher, were just a few of the reasons to end up there.

The S-21 prison was mainly a place where people would be detained for questioning. Being executed was a guarantee, but not before application of torture to extract sufficient info from the prisoner to make other arrests possible. Guards that would kill a prisoner as a consequence of the applied torture, would be accused themselves and end up being killed. Only 7 prisoners survived upon liberation.
